Trade deadline passes and the Magic stay silent; fans say “$#%@!”

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone and despite the many grumblings from fans, the Orlando Magic did not make any move.  Otis Smith and Stan Van Gundy maintained all along that they were not being active in the trade market and this should come as no surprise.  However, with all the chaos that has taken place across the league it’s hard to blame the Magic fans for being somewhat upset that they didn’t get to play in the baller-swap even just a little.

Well, the good news is that the Magic DID win a little bit today thanks to Danny Ainge and the Celtics deciding to trade away one of their key competitive advantages.  In case you missed it, Boston shipped Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Jeff Green and Nenad KRS-Tic.  No, nobody knows why they did this… everything is speculation (knee, ability to re-sign him among the rumors, complete lack of concern for the Magic).  Perk was one of the few big men in the league who was able to muscle Dwight around down low and always made it significantly more difficult for D12 to do what he does.  Good riddance.

As far as the silence goes, keep in mind that the Magic COMPLETELY overhauled their entire roster just over two months ago.  At this point, tinkering just to tinker gets nothing accomplished.  Yes, they are up and down but they were having the same problems before the big trade.  The problem is deeper than swapping a piece here and there.

Furthermore, there was nothing out there that was moved that would have made the Magic that much better.  Deron Williams and Carmelo Anthony weren’t going to happen and the tiresome Chris Paul rumors had less chance than anything.  Even more importantly, a trade takes two teams to agree to.  This simple fact is constantly forgotten by fanatics as they criticize team management for doing nothing.  Especially as you all forget the mega-trade of December 18th.

Looking at the teams above the Magic, nobody made themselves better and Boston clearly made themselves weaker.  That’s the bottom line and the most important takeaway from today.  So stop with all of the pipe-dreams, get off the trade machine and just maintain your focus on worrying yourself to death over whether or not Dwight Howard likes you.

    I question the Rashard trade and letting J Will get away. Matt Barnes departure was bad too!!! We need some agressiveness on this team! If you being called for fouls make sure you give a reason to call it!!!

    Damn Otis Smith the trading deadline has come & gone & no move ? How do you expect to re-sign Dwight Howard after next season with a crappy roster like this, you better go make a push for Chris Paul this offseason or we gonna be like the Magic of 1996 when we lost Shaq for nothing.

    Crappy roster? Stan Van Gundy is a soldier standing next to a fifty cal. on top of a Hummer while insisting on shooting at the enemy with a handgun. There is more than enough on this team to go deep especially with Perk gone (Thanks Ainge). The lack of aggresiveness isn’t from the players it is from the crappy offensive system that Van Gundy runs, and his PT choices. Vince Carter fell victim to this, and now Jason Richardson. Is it really a coincedence that high scoring players come into SVG’s system and slump? How can any of these players play to their potential if they’re all expected to shoot three’s the entire game? This is the a terrible misuse of an enormous amount of firepower.
