Orlando Magic reportedly expressing interest in acquiring Jamal Crawford
The Magic have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Jamal Crawford in a sign and trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks, according to Alex Kennedy of HOOPSWORLD. Crawford is a free agent but looking for far more money than the Magic would be able to offer due to being well over the salary cap. It’s been reported that Crawford is looking for a deal in the $8-10M per year range.
Crawford was the Hawks do-everything 6th man the last two seasons and won the 6th man of the year award in 2009-10. Magic fans will most recently remember him from murdering Orlando in the playoffs last April when he averaged 20.5 points per game for the series. Crawford would provide immediate scoring punch and give the Magic a player that can create his own shot at any time.
Another interesting potential angle to this trade is that Crawford’s old teammate Josh Smith, has long been a target for Dwight Howard. I wrote the other day of a potential trade idea that would bring Smith to Orlando. While any trade where the Magic would acquire Crawford and Josh Smith would likely make sense for the Magic, it doesn’t necessarily make sense for the Hawks. Especially after they finally turned the corner last season and finally beat Orlando, a division rival.
Also, before you even think about it… The Magic would not be able to turn around and flip Crawford for Paul or any other player. Once ha player acquired via a sign and trade, the team has to wait at least 3 months before trading him (at least under the previous CBA).
