Jameer Nelson to Present Runway To Hope $25K to Help Fight Childhood Cancer
Jameer Nelson will present Runway To Hope with a check for $25,000 at their 2013 Spring Fashion Soiree fundraiser on Saturday, May 11 . Nelson will also support the organization at their annual fundraiser serving as a “celebrity escort” during the fashion show. The event will be hosted by USA Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas and The Twilight Saga actress Ashley Greene.
“I love to help kids, and being a professional athlete allows me to see different places in the world, providing me with the resources to reach out and help kids from all walks of life,” said Nelson. “The NeJame family has always been great to my family and me, and I believe in their organization, Runway To Hope. We all hope one day we can find a cure for childhood cancer and all other forms of cancer. I am humbled to be a part of this event, which is for a great cause.”
Nelson’s donation to Runway To Hope is made possible through the 2012-13 Rich and Helen DeVos Community Enrichment Award. Each year, the Orlando Magic honors a player who has dedicated his efforts off the court for the purpose of enhancing others’ lives at the annual Orlando Magic Youth Foundation Black Tie and Tennies Gala. In addition to receiving the award, the player is granted $50,000 from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation to donate to the charity of his choice. Nelson will donate the other $25,000 to another organization in Central Florida later this summer.
Runway To Hope’s 2013 Spring Fashion Soiree features a special fashion show with more than 60 children, ages 2 to 18, who are battling or have overcome cancer. The youth will model clothes and make their fashion debut with a local and national celebrity escort. In support of the organization’s efforts, Nelson along with Magic Community Ambassador Bo Outlaw and two Orlando Magic Dancers will serve as “celebrity escorts” for the youth participating in the fashion show. All funds raised will support the pediatric oncology programs at Florida Hospital for Children, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Nemours Children’s Hospital.
Runway To Hope was founded to assist in increasing survival rates of childhood cancer as there has been little to no increase in survival rates in the last 20 years due to the lack of access to new cancer agents. Cancer is still the leading cause of death by disease in children.
Runway To Hope has partnered with Florida Hospital for Children, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Nemours Children’s Hospital as beneficiaries of their fundraising efforts. Not allowing any politics to enter into the cause of helping defeat childhood cancer, Runway To Hope has entered into a unique arrangement serving to benefit all three hospitals by providing goods, services and funds for research, technology and family assistance.
Props to Jameer and props to the continued charitable endeavours of Rich and Helen DeVos.Powered by Sidelines
