Report: Joel Embiid to enter NBA Draft
While it seemed likely that University of Kansas big man Joel Embiid would enter the 2014 NBA Draft, it seems rather certain at this point. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports has reported that a formal announcement of his decision to turn pro will be coming soon.
Joel Embiid responded to top KU recruit Cliff Alexander saying that he has not made a decision yet. Both JoJo and Woj may both be correct in this case.
Embiid is projected by many draft experts to be one of the few elite prospects in the conversation to be the number one overall pick. At a minimum, his draft floor appears to be no lower than 5th overall – meaning he will certainly be in the draft conversation for the Orlando Magic.
The largest concerns over the 20 year old prospect are the same seen over the last few years for the majority of big men – a bad back. Embiid missed several games over the end of the season, including the NCAA Tournament because of the injury. As NBA teams get their doctors on the case, Embiid’s stock will either rise a little or drop a lot.
Embiid finished his freshman season at KU averaging 11.2 ppg, 8.1 rpg and 2.6 blocks per game. More importantly, he improved in all aspects of the game throughout the year – turning into arguably the team’s most important player (i.e. not Andrew Wiggins).
