Could David Lee bring his bumbling defense to the Magic?

Ahhhhh, my favorite time of year! Rumor season 2.0. While trade deadline time brings on fun, speculative rumors, nothing pops the proverbially rumor mill like the warmth of an oncoming summer. Today’s rumor du jour comes via Marcus Thompson, a Golden State Warriors beat writer for the San Jose Mercury News.

The rumor goes like this: David Lee, the 31-year-old Power Forward, former Florida Gator and former two-time All-Star, is a potential trade target of the Orlando Magic.

The reasoning goes like this: David Lee is a veteran who can score a lot of points and the Magic are a terrible team, who need a veteran presence.

The rumored trade goes something like this: Arron Afflalo and etc. for David Lee and etc.

I’ve been told to watch out for Orlando as a potential trade partner for Golden State. They have cap space and after a second consecutive year finishing way down in the Eastern Conference standings, they need to make a move. They might be a taker for David Lee for the same reasons the Warriors were back in 2010: they need someone who can produce reliably and usher the franchise into respectability. -Thompson

Now, this isn’t necessarily the worst rumored trade I’ve seen in a while, but it certainly is a poor one to put your name behind. While Lee is a more than capable offensive player, he provides little to a rebuilding franchise that is priding itself on “process” and “efficiency”. Lee is a poor defender and his ultimate red flag obviously becomes that an up-and-coming playoff team, is trying to desperately move his remaining two years, $30.5M left on his contract. Money that would certainly look better being thrown at a mini-max player, such as Eric Bledsoe.

To be fair to Thompson, he does cite that things will change a great deal as the draft takes place and free agent dominos begin to fall. Not to mention the rumored (obvious) interest by Golden State in Kevin Love – where Orlando would fit into the picture much clearer as a 3rd team facilitator.

On the mBo “Grains of Salt Scale”, this rumor receives a 2.5 grains out of 10.
