Summer League Magic Player Preview: Asauhn Dixon-Tatum
The 2014 Orlando Summer League begins Saturday. We’ll be taking a look at some of the Magic’s squad invitees. The list is subject to change, but there are currently 19 men on Orlando’s roster. You already know about Victor Oladipo, Dewayne Dedmon, and last year’s second round selection Romero Osby who is back after being cut before the ’13-’14 season began and spending time in the D-League. As well as draft pick-ups Aaron Gordon, Elfrid Payton, and Roy Devyn Marble. We’ll peek at the rest.
Who is Asauhn Dixon-Tatum?
The 23-year-old from Auburn University is the only other 7-footer aside from Dedmon on the Magic’s Summer League squad. The Anderson, Indiana native will be wearing #40 for Orlando. Asauhn’s statistics leave a lot to be desired, but he’s very confident he can make it in the NBA, and there’s room on the Magic roster for a shot blocker like Dixon-Tatum.
In 30 games with the Tigers in ’13-’14, Asauhn averaged 6.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, and 2.1 bpg on 57.5 FG% and 66.7 FT% at 22.5 minutes per contest. Large improvements made in comparison to his first season at Auburn in ’12-’13. Asauhn wasn’t nearly as involved in Auburn’s offense as he was back in his JUCO days. The guy doesn’t have a deeply scouted background, but he has the potential explosiveness and timing you want from a big guy who can swat shots and get easy buckets around the rim. If Dixon-Tatum proves to be a diamond in the rough, Dedmon better be careful.
